Boston Herald columnist Margery Eagan is blown away by Deval
It's pretty early in the campaign for the type of ink that the Mlton Democrat is getting from hard-boiled newspaper folks, but here's how MS Fagan's column opens today,
Every once in a while a politician shows up around here who’s got it all going. A natural. Deval Patrick’s one of those.
Smooth, smart, easy, endearing, both charisma and the humble thing going. He shakes your hand, looks you straight in the eye, says it’s good to meet you like he really means it. He talks about the politics of hope, of building up, not tearing down. Your better self gets all puffed up. “Whenever he speaks I hear people say words like ‘wow,’” says somebody who once worked with him. “He inspires.”
And not just die-hard liberals swooning and weeping at the Democratic convention Saturday. “The best week of my life,” said one of them, Becky Smock of Hanover. Front row for Springsteen. Saw Barack Obama up close. And on Saturday “I got to vote for the next governor of Massachusetts!” Did you know: Deval wrote his own speech. Always does.
