State Trooper reportedly assaulted by driver
HYANNIS – A Massaschusetts State Trooper was allegedly assaulted by a woman who initially refused to stop for him. Trooper Michael Popovics tried to stop an SUV by the airport in Hyannis Thursday afternoon but it refused to stop. He followed the vehicle to what turned out to be the driver’s residence on Baxter Road in Yarmouth. That’s where 35-year old Monfreida James is accused of attacking Popovics. He suffered a minor head injury and scrapes but is expected to be okay.
Driver hits medical office
MASHPEE – A driver escaped serious injury after their vehicle struck the Mashpee Medical Associates building on Industrial Road late this morning. There was damage to the building’s lobby but no one inside was hurt. Mashpee Police are investigating the crash.
Gas leak shuts Route 6A
YARMOUTH – A gas leak temporarily closed Route 6A west of Willow Street early Thursday afternoon. It’s not clear what caused the leak at Abbicci’s Restaurant. Keyspan was able to quickly cap the leak and firefighters ventilated the building. No one was injured.
Officials warn about rabid raccoon in Ptown
PROVINCETOWN – Officials in Provincetown are warning anyone who may have been exposed to a rabid raccoon to get tested as soon as possible. One person was treated for a bite and animal control officer Ruth Ann Cowing has been on alert since the animal was spotted in an alleyway by the Front Street Restaurant on Commercial Street. She told Cape Wide News Thursday evening she believes a racoon caught after acting suspicious is the one in question. It was euthanized and sent to a state lab for priority testing for rabies. It’s believed three other people may also have been victims but left before officials arrived.
Traffic stop leads to drug charges
FALMOUTH – Two men face cocaine charges after a traffic stop in Falmouth. Ofc. Michael Rogers spotted a man he knew to have a suspended license and caught up to his vehicle in Falmouthport. The driver 22-year old Tawan Matthews allegedly had 15 grams of cocaine on him. He was charged with trafficking in cocaine, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, conspiracy to violate controlled substance laws and possession of marijuana. His passenger 26-year Steven Rose of Randolph was charged with trafficking in cocaine.
Route 6 crash slows morning commute
YARMOUTH – A two-vehicle crash slowed the morning commute along Route 6 westbound this morning. The crash happened just before 7 AM by exit 8. No serious injuries were reported but traffic was delayed while the vehicles were removed. State Police are investigating the crash.
