Elderly woman escapes injury after frightening crash

- Quite a scene outside the CVS Pharmacy on Putnam Street in Marstons Mills when a car went out of control and left this scene. Barnstable Police are investigating if the elderly woman driving hit the gas instead of the brake while backing out of a parking space.

The Toyota Camry lurched backwards over some bushes and a lamppost, then jumped a curb and climbed a tree backwards. Incredibly the woman was not seriously injured. A Cape Wide News reader caught the amazing scene. Posted on 7/13 at 7:30 PM.

Dennis crews busy with car into building, gas leak

- Firefighters in Dennis were busy late this afternoon with two incidents. A car struck a building at 640 Route 28 in Dennisport during a heavy downpour around 4:15 PM. The driver was not hurt and no one in the structure was hurt either. Dennis Police are investigating. Meanwhile a ruputured gas line at the Dennis DPW facility on Theophilus F. Smith Road filled the building with potentially explosive levels of gas. Firefighters used a ladder truck to break a skylight to vent the fumes. A Keyspan crew was enroute to make repairs. Crash closes busy Harwich road

- Pleasant Bay Road was closed between Route 137 and Route 39 after this crash Thursday afternoon. An SUV can be seen with damage to the front. Harwich Police are investigating the crash. Further details were not immediately available. Posted on 7/13 at 4:00 PM; photo submitted by WB.

Man charged with OUI after hitting moped
NANTUCKET - A Nantucket man was charged with operating after the influence of alcohol after his vehicle struck a moped around 5 PM Wednesday. 22-year old Lindsey Butler is accused of causing the crash at the intersection of West Creek Road and Orange Street. Neither passenger on the moped was seriously injured. Posted on 7/13 at 4 PM.

Man drowns off Chatham
clighthousebeach212_01CHATHAM - Chatham Police are investigating an apparent drowning Wednesday. Police and firefighters along with the Harbormaster rushed to Lighthouse Beach shortly after noon Wednesday and pulled a man from the water. The victim identified as 55-year old Neil Goren from Nashua, NH was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death. It was the second drowning on Cape Wednesday (see related story below).

Fire damages Falmouth house
FALMOUTH - A malfunctioning clothes dryer may be to blame for a smoky basement fire in a Falmouth home. Crews responded to 25 Toledo Street about 2 AM. The occupants had already made it out safely and firefighters were able to quickly put out the flames and ventilate smoke. Posted on 7/13 at 4:00 AM.

Yarmouth police sound alarm over "replica" guns

- Can you tell which one of the guns is real and which is a replica? Now imagine you're a police officer confronted with one! Thats the concern being raised by Yarmouth and other law enforcement agencies after two close calls in that town. One happened during a large fight on July 5th, the other just last night at the Cumberland Farms on Route 28 where police called to reports of six people arguing. Both times replica guns were confiscated for safety reasons. Police want to get the word out before one of these guns are mistaken as real and someone gets accidentally shot.

Man killed in Sandwich crash
SANDWICH
- A Sandwich man died after his vehicle was broadsided by a van at the intersection of Route 6A and Ploughed Neck Road shortly before 4 PM. Rescuers had to extricate 80-year old Edward Sibley the victim from his vehicle. He was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police say Sibley's vehicle failed to stop at the intersection. Police will be trying to determine if a medical condition may have led to the crash. Investigation leads to drug arrest in Yarmouth
Followup leads to another arrest for drugs, firearm
YARMOUTH - Officers from the Yarmouth and Barnstable Police executed a search warrant at the American Host Motel on Route 28 in Yarmouth Tuesday evening. They seized drugs and drug paraphernalia including 14.1 grams of cocaine. 38-year old Tyrone Myers of Dorchester (pictured) was arrested on charges of possession of Class B [(cocaine) subsequent offense], possess of class B with intent to distribute (subsequent offense) and possession of class D [(marijuana) subsequent offense]. Meanwhile information from this bust led Barnstable Police to execute another warrant at 305 Megan Road in Hyannis where a small amount of marijuana and a .357 revolver were recovered. 29-year old Michael Fernandes of Hyannis was charged with possession of Class D and unlawful possession of a firearm. Police say Fernandez has a long record and they also charged him with being an armed career criminal which carries a longer mandatory sentence.

Man dies at Dennis Beach

- Authorities will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death of a man at Inman Beach off Chase Street in Dennis this morning. Lifeguards had not arrived for work yet when bystanders called 911 and pulled the man out of the water. He was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital where he died. Officials are checking if the man may have had a medical condition while swimming. Portuguese man-a-war jellyfish have now been seen as far north as Harwich but there was no indication the man may have been stung. Late this afternoon police identified the victim as 80-year old Gennedy Gristan of Brighton. Man charged with 7th operating under
BREWSTER - Brewster Police arrested a Manomet man accusing him of his seventh operating under the influence of alcohol. Police responded to reports of a vehicle driving erratically on Route 6A. They found 39-year old Sean Mahoney slumped over the wheel of his vehicle still partially in the roadway. In addition to the OUI he was charged with operating negligently to endanger, operating with an open container and several other motor vehicle infractions.
