First soldier from Cape dies in Iraq Conflict

markvecc_01EASTHAM - An Eastham man has become the first Cape Cod soldier  to die in the Iraq war. 25-year-old Mark Vecchione's family got the bad news Tuesday night.

The Army Sergeant was on his second tour of Iraq when an improvised explosive device detonated near his tank.

Vecchione was born in Hyannis. He graduated from a high school in Arizona before his family moved back to Cape Cod. He joined the Army shortly after Sept. 11, 2001.

Power outage reported in Centerville/Mills area
MARSTONS MILLS - Power was knocked out for a short time this afternoon in parts of Centerville and Marstons Mills. No traffic accidents were reported so its believed an equipment failure was to blame. Service was restored to most area in less than a half hour.

Woman drowns in Brewster
BREWSTER - A woman drowning this afternoon in Brewster. Details are sketchy but reports from the scene say bystanders had pulled the woman from the water and started CPR by the time EMTs arrived on Linnell Landing Road around 4 PM. The victim later identified as 69-year old M. Geraldin Pereira of Seekonk was rushed by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital where she later passed away. Further details were not immediately available.

Traffic exasperation along Willow Street
YARMOUTH - It was en exasperating day for commuters along Willow Street Wednesday. A new traffic pattern was put into place as work continues on the widening project. Traffic was doing pretty well until a truck snagged a utility pole forcing detours for a time. Traffic is moving again but allow extra time in the area.

Woman robbed at knife point in Hyannis
HYANNIS - Police are looking for the suspect accused of pulling a knife on a female bicyclist Tuesday night. The 18-year old victim from the former soviet republic of Belarus told police the man jumped from a dark colored SUV as she rode on Route 28 near Bearses Way, pulled the knife and demanded her purse. He then fled the scene. The victim was not hurt.
