He's been identified as 75-year old Fred Ritvo of Brewster a veteran of the Korean and two tours in Vietnam Wars. In a tragic irony he was in Bourne to attend a funeral for a veteran.

Officials believe Ritvo swerved into oncoming traffic and struck the dump truck head on. The dump truck driver managed to slow the truck to a stop and avoid having vehicles rear end him. A fire department spokesman says the dump truck whose driver Tyrone Reine of Falmouth escaped uninjured caught fire after the crash and the flames spread to nearby brush. The highway was closed to traffic in both directions following the accident for about 5 hours causing gridlock in the area.

Rescue crews responding a burning vehicle at 8:35 a.m. Tuesday said Fred Ritvo was traveling east on Sandwich Road on the cape side of the canal and swerved for 400 feet in and out of oncoming traffic before he struck a dump truck driven by Tyrone Reine of Falmouth.  Although Reine pulled to the side of the road to avoid the swerving pickup, Ritvo's vehicle struck the 10-wheel dump truck head-on. Ritvo likely died upon impact. The crash sent a wheel flying from Reine's truck and tore off some of the hydraulics, police said.
