Groundbreaking for new theater in Wellfleet and your chance to win a lifetime subscription
Wellfleet, MA - Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater is thrilled to announce the Groundbreaking Ceremony for its new 200-seat, state-of-the-art theater. After five years of planning and fundraising, WHAT will be breaking ground Sunday, August 20th at noon. (Rain date will be Sunday, Aug. 27 at noon.) The public is invited to come and celebrate with Jeff Zinn (Producing Artistic Director), Julie Harris (WHAT Honorary Chairman and 5-time Tony Winner) and Jimmy Tingle ("60 Minutes" commentator and TV comedian.) The event will take place under a tent alongside the Wellfleet Post Office on Route 6 -- the construction site of the new theater. Refreshments will be served.
Keeping Old Theater
Everybody loves the quirky old WHAT theater on the harbor that's been a long-time Welfleet landmark. WHAT will continue to use this charming, intimate space for many of its summer plays and special events. Because the old theater had no heat, WHAT could not use the theater year-round. Limited handicapped access, backstage area, or wingspace meant that many productions WHAT wished to stage were impossible. WHAT will continue to use this charming old landmark to augment its extended schedule in the new theater.
WHAT's new two-story theater creates a superior stage and opportunities for the whole community. It will open the door for collaborations as a venue for music, dance and other events. You'll get to see productions we couldn't mount before. You'll be able to explore theater in greater depth throughout the year, be it through staged readings of new works, informal talks, or apprentice programs in stagecraft. The new theater's location literally links it - via a closed passageway - to the Wellfleet post office, making it an integral part of many people's daily lives. The addition of a meeting and reception room, kitchen, and two-floor lobby will make it a key gathering place for the arts.
Lifetime Subscription Drawing
On sale during the event will be tickets for a drawing for two sets of lifetime subscriptions to WHAT's main stage. The raffle tickets cost $50.00. They can also be purchased by calling the WHAT administrative offices at (509) 349-3011 or by stopping by the WHAT box office at the harbor. They can also be purchased online by clicking here.
The drawing will be held September 11 at the WHAT benefit performance of Stuff Happens by David Hare at the Provincetown Town Hall. The winners do not have to be present to win.
