Our infamous bottleneck expected to close by September 20
You'll save about 20 minutes leaving or getting here next summer

bournerotarybefore_400The end is near for Massachusetts' notorious Sagamore rotary. Massachusetts transportation officials announced today that the rotary in Bourne should be closed to local traffic on September 20, 2006.

This marks a major milestone for the $59 million dollar project. Flashing electronic signs on Route 3 South just before the bridge already alert motorists to the pending change.

Entrances to the rotary from Buzzards Bay and Sagamore will be blocked, and traffic will be funneled under the presnt rotary's site.

The aerial on the right was taken a few monthes before the new construction began and shows what it once looked like.

State officials say the project will reduce traffic time by 20 minutes during the tourist season both for travelers coming to and leaving the cape.
