EASTHAM - An army of police officers converged on Eastham late Tuesday night after someone fired several gun shots here at the Eastham Police station on Route 6 sometime after 8 PM. There were no reports of injuries at the station.
A massive manhunt commenced involving local police from several towns as well as Mass State Police and several roadblocks were reportedly set up. Police were able to determine who their suspect was and responded to a house off Samoset Road but the suspect left that house before a perimeter was established. About 11:40 PM officers reported shots fired and requested an ambulance to Samoset Road and Herring Brook Road about where the star is on the above map. Samoset Road is directly opposite the Eastham Police station. The Eastham Police station is marked to the right. The suspect was reportedly was shot by police and was later was pronounced dead at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
Before noon on Wednesday Cape & Islands District Attorney Michael O'Keefe named the deceased as 23 year-old David Hill of Eastham who was arrested twice by local police earlier this year. O’Keefe also said the suspect was wearing a bullet-proof vest. O'Keefe also said the preliminary investigation indicated police did everything proper to "protect the community and themselves". Media reports say Hill had called relatives after the shooting saying he wanted to take someone hostage and kill a police officer. Hill's father runs the Box Lunch sandwich shop in Eastham and published reports say there had been a number of unsolved robberies at the store but it was unclear if that was a factor in Tuesday night's incident.
Relatives told police Hill said he wanted to kill himself and take a police officer with him. Hill, who was armed with a semiautomatic .40-caliber handgun and 34 rounds of ammo and was and wearing a bulletproof vest, was fatally wounded in the confrontation with officers, O'Keefe said.
