Chatham fire; Barnstable, Dennis crashes

Workshop gutted by fire in Chatham
CHATHAM - Fire destroyed a workshop in Chatham early Wednesday morning. Crews arriving on Pond View Road off Route 28 about 2:30 AM found the 1 1/2 story building fully involved. It was unoccuppied at the time and there were no reports of injuries. Mutual aid from Brewster and Orleans covered the empty Chatham station. The cause of the fire is under investigation. There were some minor traffic slowdowns in the area during the morning commute while firefighters mopped up and investigated the scene. Photo courtesy of Jake O'Callaghan.

Several escape serious injury in Barnstable crash
BARNSTABLE - At least three people were in this Saturn station wagon when it left Route 6A near Mary Dunn Road in Barnstable and crashed into a wooded area around midnight.

They escaped serious injury but were taken to Cape Cod Hospital by Barnstable and Hyannis ambulances to be checked out. Barnstable Police are investigating the cause of the crash. Further details were not immediately available. Photo courtesy of Ryan Somerfield.

Officers rescue woman from Dennis crash
- Police officers help save a woman involved in a crash in Dennis. Police tell CWN about noon they responded to Airline Rd. near the intersection of Route 134 for a 2 car motor vehicle accident. When he arrived, Patrolman Kenneth Gelnett found the operator of a 2000 Chrysler Cirrus later identified as 70-year old Shirley A. Dufton of East Falmouth slumped over and unconscious in the front seat of the vehicle, which was locked. Ptl. Gelnett had to break out the rear passenger side window of the vehicle with his baton, and assisted by an off-duty Harwich Police officer, Lieutenant Thomas Gagnon, who happened upon the incident they were able to immobilize her and open her airway.

The investigation into the accident revealed that the Ms. Dufton had turned onto Airline Rd. from Route 134 and had stopped approximately 75 feet from the intersection to make a U-Turn to head back onto Route 134. At this time a second vehicle turning onto Airline from Route 134 struck her in the rear. The second vehicle, a 2004 Dodge Ram pickup, was operated by 53-year old Thomas Hilchey of Harwich. Mr. Hilchey was cited for failure to use care in turning. Ms. Dufton did regain consciousness at the scene and was transported by Dennis Fire Ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital for her injuries. Mr. Hilchey refused transport to the hospital.
