Payomet Performing Arts Center Announces '07 Kids' Drama Classes

Truro performing arts center announces 9th year of drama classes for kids

Award-winning playwright, actor and director Kevin Rice will be this year's instructor

Payomet Performing Arts Center In Truro announced the ninth consecutive year of its DRAMA CLASSES FOR KIDS will start at the Payomet Tent on Friday June 29 and run on ten consecutive Friday mornings through August 31.

The Instructor for 2007 will be KEVIN RICE, award-winning playwright, actor, director and one of the founders of the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theatre (WHAT). He has traveled to Russia and directed there two of his plays Oblomov in New York and Siberian Summer. His play, One Night in the Life of Denise Ivanovich, was produced at the 2000 Edinburgh Fringe. Kevin was among fifteen individuals named as a Theatre Person of 2004 by New York Theatre Experience for the off-off Broadway production of his play Amerikus Rex.

Last August he wrote and produced Deli Theatre in Wellfleet, a site-specific production at Christine's Oasis in Wellfleet. Between theatre productions over the last ten years, Kevin has also taught at Provincetown High School and most recently, at the Cape Cod Lighthouse Charter School in Orleans. He last taught Payomet's Drama Classes for Kids in 2001 and says he's "looking forward to reconnecting with some of my students from six years ago!"

There will again be classes in two age groups:

  • Ages 4-6  from 9:30am-10am
  • Ages 7-12 from 10:15am-11:45am
  • Fridays:  June 29, July 6, 13, 20, 27, August 3, 10, 17, 24, 31

All classes take place in the new Payomet Tent at the new location: Highlands Center @ Cape Cod National Seashore, North Truro.

The sessions will include work on:

  • Getting to know each other
  • Quickie Improv
  • Vocalization
  • Presenting Stories
  • Building Plot
  • Presenting Scenes
  • Using Props & Costumes
  • and much more

There will be a Showcase Play written, rehearsed and performed the children for parents and friends on the last session.

Fees remain an affordable $40 for one or all 10 sessions. Scholarships are available. Parents are urged to register their children as soon as possible since classes fill up. Capacity is held at around 15 maximum children per age group.
