Safe Road Alliance to Sponsor Driver Skills Course at Otis 1/18-1/20

Safe Roads Alliance to Sponsor Driver Skills Development Courses at Otis National Guard Base January 18-20, 2008

Hands-On Advanced Driver Training Will Help Cape Cod Drivers and Members of the Military Master Emergency Road Skills

Safe Roads Alliance, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting safer driving, will sponsor a series of driver skills development courses at Otis Air National Guard Base on Cape Cod from January 18 ? January 20, 2008.  Facilitated by In Control Advanced Driver Training, the half-day courses use hands-on techniques on a closed course to teach drivers how to safely operate vehicles in the most challenging driving situations.  In Control is the nation?s largest advanced driver training school and is the first driver skills development program to be certified by the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles.

?The best way to learn is to practice,? said James Hayward, president, Safe Roads Alliance.

?The best way to learn is to practice,? said James Hayward, president, Safe Roads Alliance. ?We are pleased to sponsor advanced driver training courses at the Otis Base, and hope our work with In Control will help young drivers and their families develop the skills they need to stay safe whenever they?re on the road.?

The 4½ -hour long courses, led by defensive driving experts, will include lessons in:

  • Defensive driving techniques
  • Tailgating avoidance and safety
  • Steering control, speed control and spatial awareness
  • Hazardous conditions skills
  • Rapid decision-making and personal risk assessment
  • Proper seating & hand placement
  • Emergency braking and emergency lane changes
  • The dangers of distractions

?Traditional driver education programs teach students how they should react in dangerous situations, but do not provide the important real life experience needed to actually complete the necessary maneuvers,? said Dan Strollo, president, In Control Advanced Driver Training.  ?Our driver skills development programs allow students to experience challenging situations hands-on honing the skills they will need to instantaneously apply what they know ? from defensive driving techniques to rapid decision making, in a safe, unrestricted environment.  This hands-on experience is crucial to reducing the number and severity of automobile crashes.?

This is the second driver skills development event Safe Roads Alliance and In Control have hosted at Otis Air Base. The first event, hosted in October 2007, attracted over 50 students from across the Cape and was very well received by all participants.  Safe Roads expects similar results for the upcoming event.

As a partner with Safe Roads Alliance, Safety Insurance Group, Inc., is offering a five percent automobile insurance discount to all Safety insured drivers who complete the In Control course and become members of Safe Roads Alliance.  In addition, drivers with Safety Insurance coverage will also have the opportunity to participate in the driver skills development program at In Control for only $75.00; more than a 70 percent discount from the normal $299.00 enrollment fee.

A discount off the In Control enrollment fee is being offered to military personnel.

About In Control Advanced Driver Training
In Control Advanced Driver Training was founded in 2002 by professional racecar driver Brandon Bogart in an effort to lower the number of teenage accidents caused by driver error.  The half-day In Control program is an extreme driver training course designed to not only teach participants the appropriate way to respond to unavoidable, real-life road situations, but also to instill lifelong attitudes that make safer drivers?not to mention, it?s fun.  This hands-on education was adapted from existing law enforcement training that Bogart has been instructing for more than a decade.  The course is held on closed airport runways and other large paved areas where students are able to practice emergency maneuvers in a safe environment.  In Control operates a fixed site facility at the South Weymouth Naval Air Station and a mobile classroom which serves locations throughout New England including North Andover, Worcester and Cape Cod, Massachusetts.  For more information about In Control Advanced Driver Training, please visit:
