Gas meter explosion and fire termed suspicious

Smoke billows from a South Yarmouth home after an explosion involving a gas meter.
- Investigators have termed an explosion and fire in a gas meter at a South Yarmouth home suspicious. Firefighters rushed to 20 Village Brook Drive just before 8 p.m. Sunday. The homeowner had reportedly attempted to knock down the flames with an extinguisher but heavy smoke was still pouring from the house along with gas-fed flames in the rear when firefighters arrived. No injuries were reported. Keyspan was called to turn off the gas and the fire was out in about a half hour but not before there was extensive damage to the house. The State Fire Marshal's office has been called in to investigate the incident. Top photo by Richard Copley. Photo right courtesy of YFD.

SpongeBob did it: Balloon triggers Mid-Cape power  failure
Service restored in time for "the game"

An NStar lineman works to restore power after a metal balloon shorted out wires in Yarmouth.
YARMOUTH - We now know the cause of a Mid-Cape blackout late Sunday morning. NStar officials say a wayward metallic "SpongeBob" balloon got caught in high tension wires behind the Yarmouth Police station along Higgins Crowell Road causing a loud explosion and two of the three wires to fall to the ground.

Several transformers and fuses in the area also blew. Power was knocked out to a large section of Yarmouth along with part of Hyannis.

Crews were able to do some switching and quickly reduce the outage to the West Yarmouth area.

By 2 p.m. linemen had completed their repairs and the remaining power was in the process of being restored in plenty of time for "the big game." Higgins Crowell Road was closed for some time until NStar crews could make the area safe.
