Large blackout reported on part of the Cape
Dennis Fire Department inundated with calls
DENNIS - A large power outage began affecting parts of the Cape from Harwich to Yarmouth sometime after 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon. NStar equipment failure was apparently to blame. The resulting arcing apparently sparked a brush fire on Setucket Road in Dennis that Dennis Fire was called to extinguish. NStar crews were working to restore power to the area.
During the blackout Dennis Fire was inundated with multiple calls including a person struck by a car on Route 28 by Benny's and a car vs tree on Route 6A as well as several medical and fire alarm calls. Mutual aid from Brewster and Yarmouth was called in to assist. The pedestrian was not seriously injured and the driver of the car vs tree also escaped serious injury.
About an hour later several vehicles collided on Route 134 at Fresh Pond Road. No serious injuries were reported at that crash either.
As of 4:45 p.m. NStar had been able to isolate the problem and most of the power was being restored.
