Jenna Pothier, 18, was killed last night when the car she was riding in struck a tree on Edgartown Vineyard Haven Road.  The driver of the vehicle, Kelly McCarron, was thrown from the Toyota Camry and sustained sever injuries.

Ms. McCarron was transported to a Boston hospital and is reportedly in stable condition.

West Tisbury police responded to the call just before 10 p.m. last night. According to police, Ms. McCarron was found lying on the shoulder of the road. Ms. Pothier was still inside the vehicle.

Fire and EMS crews were able to extricate Ms. Pothier and transport her body to Martha's Vineyard Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Ms. McCarron was transported off island by a USCG cutter as inclement weather made a MedFlight response impossible.

Ms. Pothier graduated form the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School last year.

Ms. McCarron was scheduled to graduate with the rest of the class of 2009 on Sunday.
