Rollover death this morning on Sandy Neck Beach

Joseph Pine dies as Jeep rolls over on remote part of beach

WEST BARNSTABLE - Firefighters used a pick-up truck to remove the body of a person killed during a rollover involving three people on Sandy Neck Beach in West Barnstable early Monday morning, September 13, 2010, around 1 a.m.

Joseph Pine, 39, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Nicholas Decosta, 29, of Forestdale was taken to Cape Cod Hospital for treatment of a broken leg.

Brant Hawes, 28, of Sandwich was not injured, police said. Hawes was the only one of the three in the Jeep who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, police said.

Their vehicle rolled over and ended up in the water at the far end of the beach.  The accident occurred on a remote stretch of the beach only accessible by four-wheel vehicles.

A third person refused medical treatment.

Barnstable Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
