Building on the success of its “Plus 50” Program, Cape Cod Community College has launched an array of support services specifically designed for the adult learner, and located them in Room 212 of the South Building on the West Barnstable Campus. With grants from Civic Ventures and the Lumina Foundation, former Plus 50 Advisor, Dr. Jacquie Scarbrough, and adult counselor Linda Willoughby will work with adult learners, providing academic advising, life coaching, and ongoing mentoring and support.

Nationally, there is some evidence that adult learners are “stopping out” of higher education right now, unsure of what they should be taking to prepare for the economy’s turn-around – so they take nothing and wait. However, simply “waiting it out” puts a potential employee at the back of the pack of applicants, behind those who have been building their skill-sets and resumes with core elements in English, Math, Sciences and Social Sciences, Arts & Communications, Computer Operations, Business. All of these areas are critical to any employer, and help an applicant show a real commitment to both self-improvement and their employer’s success.

New Adult Learning Specialist Paula Fay will provide individual tutoring and organize basic computer literacy workshops for students.  Dawn Harney, Career Placement Specialist, will help adult students update their resume and cover letter, prepare students for job searches, and connect them to local employers.   Dawn’s office is just down the hall in Room 215 South.

All adult learners are invited to visit the center during its “Open House Week” November 15 through 18, 2010.  Monday, Tuesday and Thursday the Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To assist evening students, the Center will be open in the late afternoon and early evening on Wednesday, November 17 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

This week-long event will introduce adult college students as well as the entire College community to the Center’s staff and services.  Refreshments will be served, and a drawing will be held for a $50 College Book Store gift certificate.

For additional information, or to make an appointment with an adult learning professional, please call the College’s Advising Center at 508-362-2131 ext. 4318.
