"First Day" hikes planned for January 1st in Falmouth and Plymouth

DCR to host fourteen hikes throughout the Bay State on New Year's Day

The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) announced that it will once again be hosting "First Day" hikes across the Bay State to celebrate the New Year. Fourteen guided hikes will be held on January 1, 2011, with local hikes planned in Falmouth and Plymouth.

The hikes are free, family-friendly and according to the DCR, a wonderful way to reconnect parents and kids in the great outdoors.  "Think of it as the start of a new and healthy lifestyle, for the whole family," said DCR Commissioner Richard K. Sullivan Jr.

Participants are asked to arrive one half hour early to register and should dress warmly in hats and gloves, layered clothing and sturdy, warm hiking boots.  Hikers are encouraged to bring water and binoculars.

A winter, foliage-free hike offers a greater chance of seeing wild birds, fowl, deer and other animals.

Details for the Falmouth and Plymouth hikes are as follows:

In the event of inclement weather, call the DCR at 617-626-1450 after 3 p.m. on December 31, 2010 for any possible cancelations.

All hikes will be guided by park staff members and will last approximately 2 hours. Click here for more information and for a list of all 14 hike locations and times.
