Prominents members of the Cape Cod business community honored
Doreen and Chuck Bilezikian, longtime philanthropists and prominent members of the Cape Cod business community, received the Joshua A. Nickerson Society Award on Tuesday, December 7, at the Cape Cod Foundation holiday reception. The Nickerson Award, established in 1982, honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the well-being of Cape Cod and its people.
Larry Murphy, vice-president of the Nickerson Society, and Brooks Thayer, Society president and Cape Cod Foundation board member, presented the award. Murphy, whose father, Judge Henry L. Murphy, was the first recipient of the award in 1982, spoke about the Bilezikians’ philanthropic efforts, including support of local nonprofits such as Cape Cod Hospital, Cape Cod Museum of Art, Cape Cod Symphony, and Cape Cod Museum of Natural History. “They have never turned a deaf ear to people or causes in need,” Murphy said before presenting the award.
Doreen Bilezikian is vice-president of the Kelley Foundation and has been named Philanthropist of the Year by the Planned Giving Council of Cape Cod, among other honors. The Bilezikians began their business, Christmas Tree Shops, Inc., in the early 1970s. They sold the chain to Bed Bath & Beyond in 2003.
