Jeff Perry needs to resign now

Jeff Perry is a six figure albatross hanging off the neck of Cape Cod.

Jeff Perry's salary- for a "special sheriff" position which is so important that it went unfilled for years- is costing us $110K plus benefits.

That's an awful enough story right there- Perry resigned his last law enforcement position in shame after he

  1. failed to notice a brother officer molesting a child five yards from him and
  2. then ran interference for the molester after he attacked a second child.

If you want a shamed ex-cop with a very shadowy past as the #2 man in the Barnstable County Sheriff's office, there's not much that I can do for you. However, Jeff Perry is now costing us even MORE money.

Governor Deval Patrick yesterday vetoed $104K in appropriations for the Barnstable Couty Sheriff Office (BCSO).

He declined to give the money to the BCSO shortly after Perry's outrageous appointment. The State House disagreed, but Patrick exercised his veto. Now, we have to see if the heavily Democratic State House will override the veto.

If they do, all is well... with "well" being that we have a six figure special sheriff who can't be trusted. If they don't, then Jeff Perry won't cost Cape Cod another $104K in addition to his $110K salary.

However, this journalist can think of one way that we might get the money back. It's not a sure thing- Patrick has saiid that the BCSO doesn't need that money- but it's our best bet at getting that $104K in funding back.

Jeff Perry needs to resign his Special Sheriff position. Today.

I've never run a Sheriff's office. I don't know what I'd do if Sheriff Monponsett suddenly had an extra $104K. Offhand, I'd guess that $100K could hire some extra guards. I have a good friend who is a prison guard, and I'd hate to see him get shanked because the money that should have been spent on a guard to watch his back was instead used to reward a faithful republican with the very hack job that he campaigned against.

We nearly had Jeff Perry overseeing the searches of Wareham teenage girls again.

Of course, Jeff Perry won't resign. He's the most shameless pol in Massachusetts since Ted Kennedy died. He had no problem campaigning with a fake degree, and actually tried to run for the United States Congress on his disgraceful police record last year.

His past shows that he will lie and obfuscate (I'll be 35 in October, and I never had to use "obfuscate" in my writing until I started covering the Jeff Perry campaign) rather than answer questions, and it shows a pattern of people being abused while under his supervision.

This is not Democrat vs. Republican

It's not a Demo/GOP thing. If Jim Cummings tried to replace Perry with Patches Kennedy, I'd easily get 100,000 words howling on it. Some things should be above politics.

Once I'm no longer paying him, I'd actually wish him the best.

Jeff Perry has made about $2,000 a week since late January. That's over $20,000 this year. His sordid history prevented him from taking part in the BCSO's only high-profile work... a series of raids and drug sweeps in Wareham, including one at the high school. Yes, we nearly had Jeff Perry overseeing the searches of teenage girls in Wareham again.

Anyhow, $20,000 is a fine reward for his political alliances. It's not like Jeff Perry will be sleeping in the gutter if he loses this job. He still has his law career to fall back on, provided he isn't disbarred for his trail of lies and a munificent state pension. I wouldn't waste an ounce of worry on Jeff Perry once I'm no longer paying him. I'd actually wish him the best.

However, until then, he's

  1. shaming the Barnstable County Sheriff's office with his sordid presence, and
  2. costing us a fortune to do so.

Jim Cummings hired him, so don't count on him to fire him. Only one man can straighten out this mess.

Enough is enough, Jeff Perry. Do the right thing, for once. Resign. Now.
