This year's Memorial Day Celebration in Sandwich was heartfelt, meaningful

To the Editor:

It is always easier to complain about something than to take time to give praise.  A year ago I publicly asserted that the Sandwich Memorial Day Celebration sponsored by the local American Legion was becoming too political.  It seemed to be more of a campaign event than a solemn ceremony honoring our war dead.  This year there was none of that.  The history lesson provided by local speakers commemorating local military members was a refreshing change.  The respectful rituals and comforting words of remembrance were heartfelt and meaningful.

Thank you to the Sandwich Post of the American Legion for getting back to the true meaning of Memorial Day and giving the people of Sandwich something for which all can be proud.
