Hypocritical, self-serving misuse of Kennedy's inherited celebrity.
By Dennis Duffy, Cape Wind Associates.
Robert Kennedy's article opposing Cape Wind is the height of hypocrisy, a self-serving misuse of his inherited celebrity.
"It is abundantly clear that the Cape Wind facility offers significant benefits that are not currently available from any other renewable resources."
- Mass, D.P.W.
While Mr. Kennedy would prefer imported energy from Canadian hydro projects, he has been equally vocal in opposing those projects, which he calls "completely out of scale with the environment, with the economy, with anything."
Mr. Kennedy also fails to mention that incremental energy cannot be delivered to Massachusetts from the north without massive transmission expansions, a very costly and speculative proposition.
And while he criticizes the cost of offshore wind, Mr. Kennedy continues to pursue his own commercial interests in solar energy, which in this region typically costs more than twice as much.
After extensive review, the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities summarized the issue as follows: "[I]t is abundantly clear that the Cape Wind facility offers significant benefits that are not currently available from any other renewable resources. We find that these benefits outweigh the cost of the project."
