538-pound thresher shark caught

Giant predator caught during 25th Annual Monster Shark Tournament

Officials from the 25th Annual Monster Shark Tournament weigh a 538-pound thresher shark at the town dock on Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard Friday afternoon.

The thresher was caught by a crew on the fishing boat Tuna Tangler Too. Despite warm temperatures, hundreds of people showed up for the event to get an up-close view of large sharks.

The other sharks caught during the tournament included a 365-pound thresher shark caught by the fishing crew on board the fishing boat Knot Right. Another fishing crew also caught a mako shark.

The annual event, which is sponsored by the Boston Big Game Fishing Club, wraps up on Saturday.
