On Sunday, September 11 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., the Outdoor Classroom fund-raiser will be held at the Beach House in North Falmouth. The event, which features raffles and entertainment by Jimmy Decatur, Andrew Lowenstein and others, will raise funds to build an outdoor classroom behind the Bourne Middle School.
The idea of an outdoor classroom was conceived by Carolyn Forsberg, a 7th grade teacher at Bourne Middle School. The outdoor classroom will be created in honor of Freddy Dunbury, a Bourne High School junior who passed away in 1976, and his father, Fredrick J. Dunbury Sr., who worked in the Bourne school system as both a principal and assistant superintendent, and who died in 2007.
Ms. Forsberg came up with the idea of an outdoor classroom after attending Mr. Dunbury's funeral and watching a procession pass through the area where the classroom will be constructed. In that area, there is a bench in Freddy's honor and according to Ms. Forsberg, for such a special place, it is not very appealing.
The classroom will be used by students and teachers from Bourne High School, Middle School and Peebles School, by coaches and teams and members of the community.
Tony Dunbury has already begun working on the area which will be made up of pavers, wooden benches and shrubbery. The basic plan is expected to cost $7,000. Any additional funds raised will be used to enhance the layout.
The Beach House is on Route 151 in North Falmouth. A donation box will be at the event. Donations may also be set to: Bourne's Outdoor Classroom, PO Box 12, Pocasset, MA 02559.
