Here'shoping you all have your power back and that the kids are back toschool. What with the fall here in full swing and the festivities ofLabor Day weekend behind us, there's a lot going on still, here onCape Cod. Here are a number of things to look forward to as theweekend approaches. Here's hoping you all have the opportunity toenjoy this upcoming weekend with your families.


  • The 34th Annual Eastham Windmill Weekend sounds like great fun for the whole family. Annual community, family festival. Activities include a sand art competition, museum open houses, Elks Lodge events, concerts, arts & crafts, road race, chowder contest and much more. Highlight is the parade down Route 6 on Sunday, stepping off at 1pm. Most events are held at the Windmill Green, Route 6, Eastham. See schedule at

  • Exhibition: Children's Book Illustrations by Scott Nash continues from 12:00 PM - 04:00 PM at the Centerville Historical Museum throughout the weekend and will run until the end of September.

Check the calender for storytimes and playgroups. Schedule may have changed with the new school year.

ForFriday September 9, 2011:

  • Farmer's Markets continue: Osterville Farmers' Market t from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM at the Osterville Historical Museum in Osterville and/or Provincetown Farmers' Market from 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM in Provincetown

  • Small Fries: What Dwells in Shells, ages 2-5 from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM. Take the opportunity to engage your preschooler in nature with this Mommy-and-Me-style class. Through the use of songs, stories, role plays, crafts, and hands-on explorations, your preschooler will discover the world around them and develop cognitive, motor, and social skills. Each class focuses on a special animal or habitat. Call the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary in South Wellfleet for more information.

  • Enjoy the Meryl's Music & Arts Free Demo Class (0-5 years) at Meryl's Studio in Harwich at 10:30AM. Get a taste for the essential Music Together class that a child can attend from birth through age five through all nine song collections and beyond. This basic class follows the recommendations of child development researchers-grouping children of a variety of ages because this fosters natural, family-style learning. Meryl's Studio in Harwich is offering this program and running another demo class simultaneously at The Sandwich Mini Mall in Sandwich. Meryl's Music & Arts Free Demo Class (Babies 0-8 months) will also be open for a taste of Music and Arts specifically for babies 0-8 months at noon at Meryl's studio in Harwich. Every Child's development benefits from early exposure to music and movement. because the early months are so important, Music Together offers two options for babies. Babies eight months and younger at the time of registration may attend a Mixed Ages class, whether registered on their own or attending free with an older brother or sister. Babies may also take the special "Babies Class" offered as a one semester introduction to Music Together.

  • Toddler Town is being offered from 10:30 AM - 1:00 PM at Wellfleet Public Library. There will be the opportunity to have fun at their indoor gym at 11am.

  • Preschool Storytime starts at 10:30 AM at Eastham Public Library for ages 2 - 5 and includes stories, fingerplays, songs, silliness and a craft. All are welcome.

  • Head out to Green Briar Nature Center with your family to enjoy Critter Capers from 10:30 AM - 11:00 AM Visit with a naturalist and one of the animals and learn about life cycles, habits and habitats. This program, which is offered every Friday morning, is suitable for children ages 3 and up with an adult. Green Briar Nature Center  is in East Sandwich.

  • Bring your blankets and chairs and settle in under the stars at The Heritage Museums and Gardens in Sandwich, MA for a family-friendly movie! You can get there early and enjoy fun and crafts in Hidden Hollow and also a pre-show activity at our Outdoor Stage. Family Movie Nights Under The Stars from 6:00 PM - 9:30 PM

  • Cruise through Nauset Marsh on a pontoon boat in search of shorebirds and other wildlife. The Nauset Marsh Scenic Cruise will take place from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM. Learn about salt marsh ecology and the cultural history of the area. $35 members; $40 non-members; $10 less for children ages 6-12. This event is made possible through the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary in South Wellfleet.

  • For kids between grades 3 and 7, Rock Night at HYCC offers kids the opportunity to skate to the beat of popular music and socialize with their friends from 7:15 PM - 9:15 PM at The Hyannis Youth and Community Center.

OnSaturday September 10, 2011:

  • More Farmer's Markets to explore: the Sandwich Farmers' Market at Oak Crest is from 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM at Oak Crest in Sandwich and then there's the Orleans Farmers' Market from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM in Orleans.

  • The Hyannis Youth & Community Center is hosting the Barnstable Recreation Family Fun Day from 12pm to 7pm. Lots of free activities will be happening all day long including: 12-2PM: Touch-a-Truck; FREE COOKOUT (limited quantities of burgers, hotdogs and drinks!); Pre-School Fun with games, prizes, face painting, moonwalk and bouncy slide (some activities will charge a small fee). 2-4PM Public Skating for $1 (includes rentals!). 5-7PM SK8 Park Competition (Registration Fee: $5) Prizes for skateboard and bmx categories. Register and warm-up at 4pm.7PM: IJHL Cape Cod Islanders (formerly the Cubs) face off against the Albany Americans. Game tickets: $5.  Hyannis Youth & Community Center, Hyannis.
  • Paddle for the Bays is another "Call to Arms" to grab a paddle and to get closer to the waters. All are invited to PADDLE together on the bay & the rivers. Bring your own kayak, canoe or board - or use one of ours. Instruction and demos offered. All to benefit Three Bays Preservation. 10:00 AM - 03:00 PM at Dowses Beach in Osterville.

  • Turtle Trek: Trek through various habitats looking for box turtles in the field, painted turtles in the pond, or diamondback terrapins in the salt marsh. This is hatching season, so we may find young turtles emerging from nests or see them on the trail! 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM at Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary in South Wellfleet.

  • The West Barnstable Train Station & Museum OPEN from 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM.The "Cape Cod Chapter, National Railway Historical Society maintains and operates the train station on donations and volunteerism. Cape Cod Central Scenic Train Ride tickets on sale at the ticket window in the train station up to train departure at 11:55am every Saturday from May 28 to October 15; Train Station and Museum open for families and visitors 9:00am to 2:00pm.

SundaySeptember 11, 2011:

  • Come spend the day on the beautiful Cape Cod Canal (at the Buzzards Bay Recreation Area) and join hundreds of walkers for full day of fun and fundraising, featuring activities for the whole family, including raffles, prizes, lunch, games, balloon man, moon bounces, face painting, live musical entertainment, and a 7-mile walk along the Canal! Cliff Walk® for A.L.S. Cliff Walk®" for A.L.S. Sunday, September 11 at the Buzzards Bay Recreation Area. Registration is at 10am and the event will happen RAIN or SHINE!!!

  • The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster, MA is presenting a Bird Banding Demonstration with Sue Finnegan On Sunday, September 11 from 9-10:30. Sue Finnegan is a certified Master Bander and Manager of Wing Island Bird Banding Station. Join Sue and learn why bird banding is important and experience the thrill of seeing birds at very close range. You may even be invited to release a bird after it has been banded.The demonstration will be held at the solar calendar on Wing Island. Meet at the front door of the Museum where a volunteer will guide you out to the island or you can go there on your own. Rain cancels the program.
