The American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands Chapter is pleased to announce that it received $693 from JTEC as part of the Cape and Islands Youth Community Development Council grant program.
Thanks to this grant, the Cape Cod and Islands Chapter of the American Red Cross was able to develop a special Fire Safety puppet show, aimed at young children, purchase a puppet show stage and two new puppets as well as special stickers to hand out to remind the kids of the show they just saw.
The number of fires our Red Cross volunteers had to support this past year was one of the most intense ever! This past year, Cape Cod Red Cross volunteers rushed to almost 40 fires and supported more than 500 individuals, families and first responders at a cost of almost $50,000. In the region, spanning from the Cape and Islands up to Northeast Massachusetts, Red Cross volunteers responded to 420 local disasters and assisted with the needs of 835 families.
The American Red Cross has seen numerous times in the past that young children can be very instrumental in alerting adults to hazardous and dangerous situations and of course, need to know what to do to prevent fires from starting. That is why the Fire Safety Puppet Show and this grant support is so important.
The American Red Cross is the nation’s foremost emergency response organization, offering neutral humanitarian care to the victims of war and devastating natural disasters as well as local disasters such as fires, Hazardous Materials accidents and more, providing victims of these disasters with shelter, food and emotional support. Today, in addition to domestic disaster relief, the American Red Cross offers compassionate services in five other areas: community services for affected victims after a disaster; support and comfort for military members and their families including emergency messaging; the collection, processing and distribution of lifesaving blood and blood products; educational programs that promote health and safety; and international relief and development programs.
The Red Cross is not a government agency and does not receive federal or state funding. It relies on donations of time, money, and blood from the American public to successfully do its work.
