Here’s hoping everyone had a great Valentine’s Day! It’s been a really mild winter and as February vacation approaches, there’s a great deal for you all to do as a family during this next week. I am going to keep the focus on this weekend in this particular weekend picks article, and I have a lot for you all to ponder and plan coming right up in my February Vacation Special Feature! Here’s wishing you all a great weekend. There is so much to do on Cape Cod, and I’m sure you’ll find that your little ones have plenty of stimulation and fun ahead!

For Friday February 17, 2012:

  • If you have a toddler and you’re anywhere near Wellfleet, Toddler Town is a reliable weekly treat for the little ones from 10:30AM - 1:00PM at Wellfleet Public Library. The indoor gym opens up at 11am so the kids can run off that extra energy!

  • Yogakids with Miss Cynthia 10:30 AM - 11:00 AM. Enjoy this drop-in program. There is no extra charge to enjoy The Cape Cod Children’s Museum and get some much needed exercise while there!

  • Critter Capers 10:30 AM. Get out to Green Briar Nature Center for a half-hour visit with the naturalist and one of the nature center’s resident animals. Suitable for families with children ages 3 and up. Fee is $2 per person. Advance registration is not required. Green Briar Nature Center and Jam Kitchen in East Sandwich.

  • Cape Cod Mall Hosts Youth at the Mall Night! From 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM: The Youth at Mall Night program is sponsored by the Town of Barnstable Youth Services Division in collaboration with the Cape Cod Mall. It provides young people with a safe place to meet their friends and enjoy appropriate entertainment performed by their peers. The program is for all ages and families. February’s entertainment will be performed by the Atlantic Coast Academy of Dance & Cape Cod Hip Hop Dancers. Human Service agencies from across Cape Cod set up display tables of the free services provided for young people, children and families. Cape Cod Mall Macy's Men's Court in Hyannis.

  • Eventide Family Theatre presents "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" 07:00 PM “This comic, heartwarming musical, will not only entertain but educate young audiences as they identify with Alexander and the anxiety of leaving behind what you know and embracing the challenges of what you don’t know..” Gertrude Lawrence Stage in Dennis.

On Saturday February 18, 2012:

  • February Vacation at the Cape Cod National Seashore 09:00 AM - 04:30 PM Saturday, February 18. ACTIVITY: PAINTING FOR CHILDREN - 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Free. Artists from the Eastham Painters’ Guild will provide the art supplies and some guidance to children who want to try their hand at painting scenes or other features found in the National Seashore. Takes place in the lobby of the Salt Pond Visitor Center. Family program. TOUR: CAPTAIN PENNIMAN HOUSE: A WHALING FAMILY’S STORY - 11:00 AM, 1 hour. Free. Learn about the Penniman family through a tour of their home and stories of their travels. Examine some of the hardships, adventures, and lifestyle of a whaling family.   • Nature Tales 10:00 AM - 11:00 at Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary in South Welfleet. The description reads: “Cozy up in our nature center for a special story and then color a picture to take home. We'll learn about the wildlife that thrives here on Cape Cod and throughout the world. Best for families with children ages 8 and younger.”

  • For the Love of Turtles Open House 10:00 AM - 02:00 PM Join us for our February Open House! Explore the Discovery Center, make a marine animal valentine, enjoy arts and crafts and games and refreshments. Meet Catch-22, Bruce, Vesuvius, and Pierce, and our eight hatchlings. Tour our new marine animal hospital. Cost: $5/person, members FREE. Donations help take care of endangered animals. National Marine Life Center in Buzzards Bay.

  • 20th Annual Cape-Wide Family Library Event - Magic by Scott Jameson 01:00 PM - 02:00 PM Come see the show audiences are calling “Superb!”, “A blast!”, and “Heartwarming fun for the whole family.” Join magician and juggler Scott Jameson on Saturday, February 18, 2012 AT 1:00 pm at the Tilden Arts Center, Cape Cod Community College for an extraordinary performance that will have you laughing out loud and perched on the very edge of your seat.   • February School Vacation Program - Year of the Whale 01:00 PM - 02:00 PM The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History presents the February School Vacation Program Year of the Whale from Saturday, February 18 through Saturday, February 25. There will be special events daily from 1-2 pm. The programs are free with Museum admission. The Museum is open to the public the whole week of February School Vacation. Saturday, February 18 Inside the Inflatable Whale. Walk into the whale. Learn all about the whale from the inside out. Free with admission but reservations required. Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster.

  • Live Animal Story Time is on from 10:30AM - 11:00AM at Green Briar Nature Center in East Sandwich! Drop by and join a naturalist for a lively story of "Peter Rabbit" and friends and a visit with one of the animals featured in the day's story. Suitable for families with children ages 3 and up.

  • Recycled Animal Art 2:00PM - 3:00PM. Join local artist Mary Richmond of Cape Cod Art and Nature for an exciting family series about creating art from items you might have discarded. All materials will be provided, but you are also welcome to bring treasures from your own trash bin. Best for ages 4–10 with an adult. Younger siblings are welcome with adult supervision and coloring supplies will be provided for their entertainment. On February 18: Mixed Media Animal Sculptures-We will look at pictures of amazing sculptures artists are making using all sorts of simple recycled materials and then we will make our own. Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary in Wellfleet.

  • Hyannis Youth and Community Center has Public Skate from 7:00PM to 9:00PM. It’s a reliable stand-by Saturday evening activity for the whole family.

Take the kids to see an Eventide Arts show in Dennis.

Sunday February 19, 2012:

  • February Vacation at the Cape Cod National Seashore 09:00 AM - 04:30 PM Sunday, February 19 MOVIE: “WALL-E” - 1:30 PM, 98 minutes. Free. In a futuristic world, human beings have destroyed Earth and evacuated the planet, leaving the cleanup to an army of robots. Due to a mishap, the dutiful WALL-E is the only one left.
