Monomoy Regional High School update

Monomoy Regional High School Building Project
Newspaper Submission #9 ~ Week Ending March 23, 2012

During the week ending March 23, the Monomoy Regional High School Building Committee held the first of four public forums on March 22 to inform the communities of what has been happening over the last few months and what to expect in the future leading up to Town Meeting votes and beyond. The forum included background information on the high school project, updates on current status of the interior design, and audience questions and comments.

The biggest news presented was the announcement of a placeholder number of $68M for the Harwich Town Meeting Warrant article.  This “not-to-exceed” number was generated to meet the March 22ndHarwichwarrant deadline.  Due to the current early stage of the design process, the number is not based on detailed cost estimates and was prepared without the use of schematic drawings.

The purpose of this number is to provide a “not-to-exceed” placeholder for the warrant article that will be adjusted prior to the Chatham and Harwich Town Meetings.  It is anticipated that the number presented at the Town Meetings will be much lower than this placeholder number.  However, since the article amount cannot be increased at Town Meeting, it was necessary to be extremely cautious in presenting a number at this time.  The actual project budget and construction costs will be determined in April once schematic design documents are completed.

In other news, the Site & Fields Subcommittee met to determine athletic field requirements to support the athletic programs envisioned by the administration.  Discussions included the review of field placement, type and number of fields.  It should be noted that the MRHSBC and its designer have been trying to develop design options that will not disrupt the existing Little League field location.  These meetings will continue to be further informed by the site survey and geotechnical analysis being conducted at this time. The architect has also begun to develop exterior design options for MRHSBC consideration and will continue to develop options based on committee input and direction.

The MRHSBC looks forward to providing further progress updates and hearing your questions at the next public forum scheduled for Thursday April 5 at 6:00 pm at the Chatham Town Hall Annex.
