Christine's Weekend Picks: September 7-9

Here’s hoping you all had a great Labor Day weekend! Well, things are going back to their old autumnal paces what with school starting up once again. An as we look to the weekend, there is still a lot to do on Cape Cod. Here are some things to do as you get ready for the weekend:

All weekend:

  • 35th Annual Eastham Windmill Weekend all day.  Annual community, family festival. Activities include a sand art competition, Elks Lodge events, concerts, arts & crafts, road race, pancake breakfast, chowder contest and much more. Highlight is the annual parade down Route 6 on Sunday, stepping off at 1pm. Most events are held at the Eastham Windmill Green, Route 6, Eastham.

On Friday, September 7, 2012:

  • Highland Cape Cod Lighthouse Tour 10:00 AM- 05:30 PM If you’re a lighthouse fanatic, or just enjoy learning a bit about lighthouses on a beautiful day, Check out the Highland Lighthouse in North Truro.

  • Critter Capers is an old favorite. Head out at 10:30 AM to hear about some wonderful critter! The Green Briar Nature Center in East Sandwich is a great place for the whole family!

  • Lap Sit Story Time 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM. This is a great introduction to literacy for the little ones. At the Brewster Ladies' Library in Brewster.

  • Tidal Flat Explorations 11:00 AM- 12:30 PM. I love the great variety of wonderfully hands-on and educational programming at the Wildlife sanctuaries in Cummaquid and Wellfleet. This sounds like a wonderful experience for the whole family. Mass Audubon’s Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary in Cummaquid.

  • Spaghetti Supper 6:00 PM. Community building over spaghetti! The first Friday of every month…spaghetti supper! The Congregational Church of South Dennis in South Dennis.

  • VivaPalooza Healthy Living Expo 08:00 AM - 04:00 PM. An annual healthy living expo which focuses on education, empowerment, and advocacy for all. It is a free, fun-filled, and informative event that showcases a full spectrum of healthy choices available on Cape Cod. Local vendors will demonstrate products and services for a healthier lifestyle, speakers will discuss today’s important health topics, and area restaurants will provide a healthy fare sampling. A farmer’s market, kids’ activities, health screenings, blood drive, live entertainment, yoga, T’ai Chi, a Zumbathon, and more. At the high school in Barnstable.
  • Bird Banding Demonstrations with Sue Finnegan 8:30 AM- 10:00 AM. This is always a really popular event. Cape Cod Museum of Natural History always has great programming that appeals to children and adults alike! The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History is in Brewster.

  • Kayak Trip 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM. Sounds awesome. At the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary in South Wellfleet.

  • Train Rides from Historical Train Station 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM. A favorite for the boys but the girls enjoy train rides too! West Barnstable Train Station in West Barnstable.

  • Highland Cape Cod Lighthouse Tour 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM. I love to get out to see lighthouses. I can’t wait to get out to see this one again! Highland Lighthouse in North Truro.

  • Cape Cod Symphony Youth Orchestra Auditions 10:30 AM - 3:00 PM. For budding musicians wanting to take their commitment to music to the next level: Cape Cod Conservatory of Music and Arts in West Barnstable.

  • Family Day at the Beach 11:00 AM - 03:00 PM.  Rain date 9/9. Games, sand sculpture contest, face painting, food and fun for the whole family. Prizes. Bonfire, live music by the Beach Plums at 6:30pm. A Harwich Cranberry Festival event. Red River Beach in South Harwich.
  • 12th Annual Seaside LeMans 12:00 PM - 04:00 PM Featuring Formula One European-style racing carts. Four hour race benefits local charities. Free admission. Entertainment, food and children’s activities. Mashpee Commons in Mashpee.

  • Mermaid Princess Tea Party 9:00 AM. This sounds like a blast, and I wish we could make it to what sounds like every mermaid princess’s most cherished memory!!! At The Flying Bridge Restaurant in Falmouth!

  • Highland Cape Cod Lighthouse Tour 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM. What better day to visit a lighthouse than on a Sunday…late afternoon, before closing…Highland Lighthouse in North Truro.

  • 16th Annual Cliff Walk For A.L.S. Fundraiser 11:00 AM. Rain or shine, 10am registration. 7-mile walk followed by activities for the whole family, food, entertainment, raffles, prizes and more. Benefits the ALS Family Charitable Foundation. Buzzards Bay Recreation Area, Main Street, Buzzards Bay. 
  • Annual Eastham Windmill Weekend Parade 01:00 PM. Steps off at Old Orchard Road to the Windmill Green on Route 6, Eastham.

And there you have it! Another weekend coming up and lots of choices. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying some quiet time hiking, biking or doing yard work! Have a great weekend, and don’t forget to breathe and appreciate all that you have…and how crazy September feels as our lives shift from summer into fall.
