By Steve Walsh, vice president of business services for Comcast’s Greater Boston region.
Ever since arriving on Cape Cod in 2003, Comcast has been committed to providing innovative products and a superior customer experience for businesses and consumers.
Over the last 10 years, Comcast has introduced dozens of new services from Business Ethernet with speeds of up to 10 Gbps to our revolutionary X1 video platform – all delivered over the company’s advanced fiber network. Throughout that time, the Cape has received Comcast’s latest products and services at the same time as the City of Boston and before just about anywhere else in the country.
We’ve built one converged, fiber-rich network to unify our customers’ experiences. On that network, we’ve built an advanced platform powered by a common architecture, open standards and IP protocols that’s letting us bring new and innovative offerings to our customers faster than ever.
At the core of Comcast’s network is a fiber backbone that stretches across the country with 140,000 miles of fiber - enough to wrap around the earth six times.
Our network uses the industry's most advanced optics/lasers and IP routing technologies.
Dozens of converged regional area networks interconnect to create this fiber backbone that delivers video, voice and high-speed Internet services to tens of millions of customers throughout the country. IP technology ties all of this together, creating a highly scalable connectivity platform or “IP core.”
There is fiber from our distribution centers into the streets in every single community and neighborhood we service on the Cape and throughout the country – and Cape Cod Community College is just one of many examples of customers who have already seen the benefits that
services like Ethernet can provide. Plus, we continue to invest in our network as noted in this release.
As a result, Comcast offers an unmatched portfolio of customizable products and services, including speeds of up to 10 Gbps. We manage every aspect of the customer experience including the last mile of our network so that we can guarantee Quality of Service. Plus, not only can Comcast connect business locations throughout the Cape and the Islands, but we can also offer the same unmatched reliability by connecting business locations coast-to-coast over our privately managed network that’s backed up by 24/7 local customer support.
Comcast Business Offerings
Comcast Business, a unit of Comcast Cable, provides advanced communication solutions to help organizations of all sizes meet their business objectives. Through a modern, advanced network that is backed by 24/7 technical support, Comcast delivers Business Internet, TV and Voice services for cost-effective, simplified communications management.
The Comcast Business Ethernet suite offers high-performance point-to-point and multi-point Ethernet services with the capacity to deliver cloud computing, software-as-a-service, business continuity/disaster recovery and other bandwidth-intensive applications. Comcast Ethernet services are significantly faster than standard T1 lines and other legacy technologies, providing scalable bandwidth from 1 Mbps up to 10 Gigabits-per-second (Gbps) in more than 20 major US markets.
My team and I work with our business customers on an individual basis, which means that we learn about their priorities, concerns and challenges even before mapping out a communications strategy – and because we have such a robust network with the capability to increase bandwidth to up to 10 Gbps for our Business Ethernet service, we have the infrastructure in place to meet virtually any business demand, which keeps our customers happy long after they’ve signed up.
Comcast’s Network Is Widely Available
Ever since arriving on the Cape in 2003, Comcast has added hundreds of miles to its network to serve additional homes and businesses. We’ll continue to explore and evaluate each and every opportunity to serve additional customers.
One factor that sets Comcast apart is the fact that Comcast manages and operates its own network – including the last mile. As a result, Comcast’s network is available to virtually all of the homes and businesses on Cape Cod and the Islands. Thanks to the reliability, scalability and flexibility of our advanced fiber network, we continue to offer new, innovative services such as the Upware marketplace, which features curated software for small business customers; while also continuing to boost our Internet speeds to offer up to 10 Gbps for businesses and up to 305 Mbps – along with our revolutionary X1 video platform – for residential customers.
Comcast Has the Capability and Flexibility to Meet the Needs of Today and Tomorrow It varies based on each customer’s need, but as businesses use more bandwidth-intensive applications like cloud computing, streaming video, videoconferencing, and other Web-based services to transform how they do business, they need much more bandwidth. For certain vertical markets, their bandwidth needs are very high, so services like Ethernet are a logical fit for them. Examples include healthcare (with its shift to Electronic Medical Records and high-resolution digital radiology) or K-12 education (with a shift toward using iPads, laptops, smartphones and other devices and online tools as part of the daily curriculum).
As you know, Cape Cod Community College chose our 500 Mbps Business Ethernet offering, which can be quickly scaled up to 10 Gbps if the school needs additional bandwidth for its students in the future, and we continue to invest in the necessary infrastructure to keep delivering new solutions that not only anticipate customer demand but also exceed customer expectations.
And, I’m proud to say that we consistently deliver speeds of up to 10 Gbps for business customers and up to 305 Mbps for residential customers. Plus, we continue to boost our Internet speeds. Just last year, we doubled the speeds of two of our more popular residential Internet offerings from 25 Mbps to 50 Mbps and 50 Mbps to 105 Mbps overnight. Furthermore, we regularly monitor the performance of our network and complete engineering work necessary to alleviate any potential traffic concerns before they become issues.
Comcast Continues to Innovate
Comcast’s Boston market is often among the first places anywhere in Comcast’s national footprint – which consists of 39 states and the District of Columbia – to roll out new products such as the X1 video platform, Skype on Xfinity, the Upware Marketplace and Xfinity Home.
We have also brought the same commitment to innovation to our customer service practices.
In fact, Cape Cod and the Greater Boston area was one of the first places in Comcast’s national footprint to implement the Comcast Customer Guarantee, which has virtually eliminated missed appointments.
Of course, our network and products are backed up by our great local workforce. We have a field management area on the Cape, which houses our network technicians and engineers serving both consumers and businesses there. Plus, we are able to ensure that customers are
receiving the services that they expect every day through our 24/7 network operations center in Massachusetts. And, most Comcast Business customer calls on the Cape are handled by our own team in our Manchester, NH call center.
We’ve always offered a wide variety of service options to meet customer demand and interest. We feel confident in our service level agreements because our network has unmatched reliability, flexibility and scalability backed up by support of local technicians and engineers who work 24/7 to make sure that our customers are receiving the service they deserve.
At Comcast, we’re looking forward to continuing to innovate and deliver even more beneficial applications and services to both our residential and business customers. We welcome the opportunity to have individual conversations with our customers about how we can best meet their needs.
Thank you again for this opportunity.
