Beehive Food Program serves 25 military families

At least 25 military families will receive monthly food packages in December thanks to the Masonic Angel Foundation’s Beehive Food Program. Beehive Food started helping families through Joint Base Cape Cod in September.

The Beehive Food Program (BFP) was launched in May 2012 after the Masonic Angels noticed an acute increase in grocery card requests. The Masonic Angel Foundation (MAF) set its volunteers to work and their response was a high-serving-count supplemental food package that would be provided once a month.

Long relationship with military

The Masonic Angel Fund (MAF) has a long tradition of helping military families in need. Working through military family service offices and also the USO, the Masonic Angels have provided assistance to military families for over a decade. MAF also works with the Veterans’ Outreach Center in Hyannis to support recently discharged veterans with children at home.

In recent months, the MAF has provided over $2,300 in grocery cards for military families facing financial emergencies. The Masonic Angels also provided $900 in emergency assistance to veterans’ families and $3,300 in holiday gifts through the USO office in Boston.

Military Beehive food package recipients are identified by family service office of the 102nd Intelligence Wing at Joint Base Cape Cod. Families from all branches of the military are eligible for assistance. The 102nd IW family services staff volunteered to be the vortex for Beehive Food assistance.

The Masons deliver the packages to the base once a month and family service staff takes care of distributing the food to the families. The Masons never know the identity of those receiving their food.

Growing Need

“Military Beehive” started with 3 families in September, expanded to 11 in October, 19 in November and know of at least 25 military families that will receive Beehive packages in December.

MAF has funding for up to 45 military families a month for ten months. It costs the Masons $10 per family to provide a food package. A generous veteran and the estate of another veteran provided the initial funding for Military Beehive. The Masonic Angel Foundation also received a donation of the remaining $2513.80 from the former M.A. Otis Food Pantry.

“We anticipate demand to exceed 45 families a month, so we’re seeking additional sources of funding,” reports MAF co-founder and President Robert Fellows
