It's open burning season in Brewster through May

Residents must obtain permits first

Although the weather the past few days undoubtedly put a damper on it, it's opening burning season in Brewster through Thursday, May 1, 2014.

The official start of the burn was on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 which explains the plumes of smoke rising from in front of the windmill at Drummer Boy Park on Route 6A that day.

Once the snow melts and there is some evident brush to burn, residents are reminded that a permit is required.

Permits are required annually, according to the Brewster Fire Department and may be obtained at Brewster Fire Headquarters on Route 6A or through the mail.

Each day residents intend to burn, they must call the Brewster Fire Department at 508-896-5174 that day to check conditions.
