Plans are well underway for the new complex with ground breaking set for September of this year. According to Al Alfano, ELBFI chair, library usage has doubled over the past 25 years. The library serves 7,500 cardholders--of which more than half are year-round residents of Eastham.
Although heavily patronized all year, the library, which opened over 120 years ago, sees an uptick in users during the height of the vacation season--an average of 480 users on a summer's day.
The new plans for the library include a 100% expansion: 18,000 square feet of community space, new collections and seating, new technology, better parking, an outdoor reading garden and an enhanced historical collection, according to an ELBFI release.
"The EPL is a vibrant community resource providing information, social interaction, educational and cultural enrichment year-round," said Alfano.
The targeted completion date of the green building is 18 months from ground breaking. As part of the site plan, the original library building will be maintained.
The Eastham Public Library is at 190 Samoset Road in Eastham.
