Why does Martha Coakley lead in the polls? Why does Steve Grossman want to be Governor? And who is Don Berwick? September 9th, Primary Day, is a day of reckoning for the Democratic Party in Massachusetts.
The nomination of Charlie Baker as the Republican for Governor is a foregone conclusion. With that, the Democratic party should be nominating someone who has clear differences with him. Someone who espouses the progressive principles of the Democratic party. Someone who will give the voters a clear choice in November.
There is no perceptible difference between Attorney General Martha Coakley and State Treasurer Steve Grossman on the issues. For that matter, there is no real difference between them and Charlie Baker. They are all three long time political activists and government managers in Massachusetts.
Many independent voters will pick up a Democratic ballot next week, precisely because there is a race. But even they won’t come out in large numbers for the choice between Coakley and Grossman. So it remains up to the party regulars to select the Democratic nominee.
Martha Coakley is their sentimental favorite because she lost so unexpectedly against Scott Brown four years ago. But Steve Grossman, has been competent as Treasurer of the Commonwealth, applying sound management and business practices to an office sometimes prone to favoritism, investing our tax revenues as if it were really our money. We love that.
Neither Coakey nor Grossman can beat Baker
But even as a competent manager he cannot draw clear distinctions with the equally competent Attorney General, let alone the uber public and private sector manager, Republican nominee Charlie Baker. Grossman has always wanted to be Governor, he ran 12 years ago. Unfortunately for him, he’s looking at the same outcome this time around.
Neither Coakey nor Grossman can beat Bake r. If Democrats on Tuesday want to give voters in November a clear choice, then only Don Berwick, who has espoused the progressive agenda with fervor and conviction, can do that. His stance on just one issue, single payer health care, should make every liberal swoon.
Don Berwick is the only disciple of the progressive agenda in this race, the kind that gave us the likes of Deval Patrick and Elizabeth Warren. His devotion to true democratic principles, leads us to endorse Don Berwick for Governor.
Sometimes it is better to vote with your heart rather than with your head, even if it won’t make a difference.
