Brooks Free Library to swap food for fines in December

Harwich library offers a fine amnesty for the final month of the year

Now through the end of December, the Brooks Free Library is offering to wipe out fines for patrons in exchange for non-perishable food items.

Bring your non-perishable donations to the library on Main Street and under the library's fine amnesty, the amount due will be erased. Items must be unopened and unexpired.

Donations will be given to the Family Pantry of Cape Cod in Harwich.

The amnesty only covers overdue fines, not bills for items lost or not returned.

The Dennis Public Library and the Eastham Public Library recently announced similar food for fines programs.

The Brooks Free Library is at 739 Main Street in Harwich, 508-430-7562.
