There is no denying the popularity of soccer especially this month with the US women bringing home the World Cup. According to US Youth Soccer, three million players between the ages of 5 and 19 are registered with the organization. Give your young soccer player the edge this summer by enrolling him/her in the Elite Player Program in Buzzards Bay in July. The 3 night/4 day program will be held at Massachusetts Maritime Academy from Sunday, July 19 through Wednesday, July 22.

The Elite Player Program (EPP) is presented by Waltham-based GPS Vacation Programs and is open to boys and girls ages U11 to U16. GPS Vacation Programs is a division of Global Premier Soccer, one of the largest youth soccer organizations on the East Coast. GPS is affiliated with FC Bayern Munich, Adidas, US Soccer and the US Soccer Club among other giants of the soccer world. At GPS, the goal is teaching soccer the right way.

The EPP is an intensive residential program geared towards dedicated players looking to progress to the next level. The main goal of the week is to develop the player's "technical abilities and functional elements of their game," according to the GPS website. The first two sessions focus on technical ability including passing, shooting and dribbling and tactical knowledge such as positional understanding. The third and final session has players putting those new skills to the test on the field.

If you son or daughter is a goalie, they will want to attend the Unbeatable Goalkeeping Academy, also at Massachusetts Maritime Academy July 19-22. This academy for ages U11 to U18 is designed by GPS Director of Goalkeeping Steve "Q" Quinones. A former professional goalkeeper, Quinones was the goalie for the original Cape Cod Crusaders team in 1993.

Elite GPS European-qualified coaches from Britain, Ireland, Europe and Africa lead the sessions. All coaches have passed background checks in their country and CORI and SORI checks here in the United States, according to GPS.

The cost of the Elite Player Program is $475 and includes all sessions, accommodations, meals and a GPS VP residential kit bag which includes a water bottle and a full uniform.
