The Town of Barnstable is seeking artists to participate in the 2016 Hyannis HyArts Artist Shanty program. The artist shanties are in Bismore Park overlooking Hyannis Harbor. One artist is chosen as the artist-in-residence for the year and the remaining artists rotate throughout the season on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis.

Applications are available on the HyArts website here. Completed applications must be received by Friday, October 23. According to a HyArts release, artists will be juried and first selections will be made by December 31. Subsequent applications will be accepted on a rolling basis to fill remaining spots as needed.

The program began in 2005 to "enliven the econmic climate in downtown Hyannis and provide opportunities and exposure for local artists," according to Melissa Hersh, Arts & Culture Coordinator for the Town of Barnstable.

The shanties are open mid-May to mid-June on the weekends and then daily through the summer. In the summer months, musicians and street performers provided an added draw to the always bustling park.

All of the artists chosen for the program are from Cape Cod and all work is handmade or handcrafted. Participants include painters, photographers, sculpters, crafters and more. See a complete list of 2015 participants here.
