Traffic delays expected for Harwich road race on Saturday

Irish Pub Road Race is on Saturday

Motorists in Harwich this weekend may experience delays. On Saturday, August 6, detours will be in place during the Irish Pub Road Race in West and North Harwich. The detours will be in effect between 9:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

According to the Town of Harwich, the following major detours will be in place:

  • Route 28 in West Harwich will be closed to traffic. The road closure will be from Belmont Road to Brooks Road.
  • Great Western Road in North Harwich will be closed to eastbound traffic from Depot Street to Lothrop Avenue. 
  • Lothrop Avenue will be closed to southbound traffic from Great Western Road. 

Motorists attempting to access businesses or homes in the detour areas will be allowed through by the detail officer. This will be the only exception to the detour.

The Irish Pub Road Race starts at the Irish Pub at 126 Route 28 (Main Street) in West Harwich. The route for the 5.25 mile race is as follows: West to North Road, right on North Road, left onto Smith Street to Depot Road West. Right onto Depot Road West to Great Western Road. Right onto Great Western Road to Lothrop Avenue. Right onto Lothrop Avenue to Route 28. Right onto Route 28, back to the Irish Pub. A map of the road race is available here.

The annual Irish Pub Road Race is held on the first Saturday of August. Check in is from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and the race begins at 10 a.m. The race benefits the Town of Harwich Ambulance Fund.
