The Sears Hometown store in Orleans closed abruptly last week according to a sign on posted on the entrance.  Sears is situated next to Staples in the Orleans Marketplace shopping plaza at 136 Route 6A.

Sears Hometown stores are independently owned and sell major appliances, power equipment, sporting goods, tools and more.  Customers may use their Sears credit card at Hometown stores or may apply for financing of their purchases.  Sears Hometown stores are part of Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores, a publicly traded company that was spun off from Sears Holdings in 2012.

The Orleans store was open for about five years.  Easily identified by the blue "Sears" sign, there was usually a line of ride-on lawn mowers or snow blowers parked in front of the store depending upon the season.  The nearest full-format Sears store is at the Cape Cod Mall in Hyannis.  The nearest Sears Hometown store is in Wareham, according to the corporate website.

Readers report they had seen the Orleans store listed online for sale several times over the past year.
