Fools is a comic fable by Neil Simon, set in the small village of Kulyenchikov, Ukraine during the late 19th century. The story follows Leon Steponovich Tolchinsky, a schoolteacher who takes a new job educating Sophia, the daughter of Doctor Zubritsky and his wife, Lenya. But it seems that generations ago a “curse of stupidity” was put on every member of the village that cannot be broken until a Zubritsky marries a Youskevitch. The only eligible Zubritsky is the beautiful Sophia, who only just recently learned how to sit down, and the only eligible Youskevitch is the ill-tempered Count Gregor, who makes everyone (literally) tremble at the mention of his name. Leon, who falls in love with the simple Sophia, must find a way to rid the village of this curse in 24 hours, or he too will become stupid as well.
Fools is not your typical Neil Simon comedy. The play is closer in style to the slapstick works of his old friend, Mel Brooks, rather than the more serious Brighton Beach trilogy. The play is a comic romp that can be enjoyed by the whole family.
Eventide Theatre Company Family Theatre production of Fools is directed by Kay DeFord who has previously directed Yours Anne, Honk!: The Musical, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Little Prince, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day as well as many others for the company.
