Letter: Eversource's rate increase proposal

from State Rep. Randy Hunt

Good Morning,

I'd like to take the opportunity to provide you with a follow-up to my March 27 letter about Eversource's electric rate increase proposal.

This past January, Eversource submitted a proposal to the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (DPU) that, if approved, would allow the company to increase their revenues by $95.9 million.

On June 1st, Eversource filed a revised proposal that shifts the balance of revenues charged between Eastern and Western Massachusetts customers.

The DPU is reviewing Eversource's request; it must make a decision by December 29, 2017. If approved, the new rates would go into effect on January 1, 2018.

As part of the review process, the DPU is hosting public hearings throughout the Commonwealth.  The full hearing schedule is below; the hearing being held in the Cape & Islands region is in bold:

Last Night:
July 26 - 7:00PM
Department of Public Utilities
5th Floor, Hearing Room A
One South Station
Boston, MA 02110

August 1 - 6:00PM
Berkshire Community College
Boland Theatre (Koussevitzky Building)
1350 West Street
Pittsfield, MA 01201

August 2 - 7:00PM
Cape Cod Community College
Main Theatre, Tilden Arts Center
2240 Iyannough Road
West Barnstable, MA 02668

The Commonwealth's Attorney General is opposed to Eversource's revised proposal. In a brief filed last Friday, the AG asked state regulators to reject the company's request and order the company to decrease its rates charged to consumers. The exact amount was unspecified.

It's important for you to know that the Attorney General's Office of Ratepayer Advocacy is a body charged with representing the interests of the Commonwealth's ratepayers before the DPU. If you'd like to contact the Office of Ratepayer Advocacy, please click this link or call 617-727-8400.

If you'd like to know more about Eversource's proposal or any other matter, please contact my aide, Matt Liber. He can be reached at [email protected] or at 617-722-2800 x8743. We'd love to assist you.

Thank you for your time in reading my update. As always, it is the honor of my life to serve you and represent your interests on Beacon Hill and beyond.

Sincerely,

Randy Hunt

State Representative

5th Barnstable District
