Bahama Breeze. A Beautiful Home on Hooper's Bay in Exuma

On the out islands of the Bahamas...
Bahama Breeze Cottage on the beautiful island of Exuma (Pat Brooks photo)

Everyone knows about Nassau, Grand Bahama, Eleuthera and the rest of the archipelago 250 miles out in the Atlantic (not the Caribbean) east of Miami. But thankfully few of you have ever heard of this unspoiled little island.

If you aren't prepared to do nothing for a few days or weeks, forget about Exuma. We came here to sit in the sun, swim and read a bunch of books on our kindles. Be sure to bring plenty to read, although the very friendly library will give you their overflow if you get stuck.

This year instead of going to a hotel (only one or two on the island), we rented a house on the ocean. This beautiful beachfront cottage located directly on Hooper's Bay with a beautiful deck provides great views of the ocean. Hooper's Bay is clean with clear calm turquoise water. It's ideal for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking or simply taking long walks. The private walkway is a few steps from the cottage to the beach. Once in a while we caught a glimpse of a beautiful large sea turtle and some majestic sting rays swimming by. It was like having our own private beach. If you are looking to get away from it all, this is the perfect location for you and your family.

Bahama Breeze Cottage is conveniently located, close to the George Town International airport (4.4 miles away), the capital George Town, golf course, restaurants and local grocery stores. Ideally located on one of the best beaches on the island.

There are two bedrooms (each with private bath), a living room and kitchen dining at the counter. Guests provide their own meals, however, the kitchen is well stocked for cooking. The maximum occupancy is 4, children welcome, pets not allowed.  All the conveniences of air conditioning, washer and dryer, WiFi & TV, linens & towels, full kitchen and appliances that made this very enjoyable.

We spent a lot of time on the large outside deck overlooking Hooper Bay on chaise lounges and used the grill for lots of tasty meals.

Plenty of beach toys like snorkels, fins, kayak and a paddle board are included plus a private cabana on the beach that protected us from the sun. The house manager, Flo, is wonderful and helpful who clearly cares a great deal about the upkeep and maintenance of the home. She greeted us on our arrival and answered all our questions.

The owners Gary and Vee Matheson were great to deal with helping us arrange our stay for two weeks. They also have another property for rent nearby.

A car is highly recommended to enjoy the beauty of the Island .  We rented a car from Thompson's Car Rental which was waiting for us at the airport, just a few steps away when we arrived. The owners were very helpful and easy to reach by email to reserve a car before we left for the trip. They have 2 locations one in George Town and the other at the airport. A very reliable company. Taxi's are available, but fares are expensive.

To reserve a vehicle: email [email protected] or call George Town:(242) 336-2442 ; or the Airport: (242) 345-0058
