Op Ed - "Sheriff Cummings gets it and is doing the job we elected him to do"

The Dec. 6th disruption of our Barnstable County Assembly of Delegates speaks volumes of the lawless agenda the offending liberal activists promote in their quest to legitimize illegal immigration. Lacking facts and data to back-up their position, they resort to forcing their agenda on moderate voters through civil disobedience. What has become apparent is that these activists share few common values in their demand that criminal illegal aliens be not held accountable for their crimes, and instead should be released back into our communities, defying our nation's immigration laws. This failed social experiment currently costs Massachusetts taxpayers over $2 billion annually, and is ballooning rapidly with offers of free healthcare and other generous benefits. Their flawed logic of each town along the Cape crafting individual immigration policies that prevent law enforcement from enforcing the law, is both unconstitutional and unlawful. It's also a slap in the face to Cape working families who are raising their kids to obey all laws, regardless of their ideology or who is in the Whitehouse. Illegal immigration has always been a threat to public safety as unvetted people enter our communities, and a burden on taxpayers who already accommodate over a million legal immigrants a year, more than any other country.

Moderate voters' first expectation of their elected officials is to provide public safety, and enforce the laws that define our society. In fact, they take an oath to do so. Sheriff Cummings gets it, and is doing the job we elected him to do. State Senator Julian Cyr on the other hand, has abandoned this promise, and lost touch with working Cape families as he panders to his liberal activist base, joining them in encouraging illegal immigration. Cyr recently signed onto safe communities bills that would outlaw Massachusetts law enforcement from working with Federal law enforcement to remove criminal illegal aliens from our communities. He then voted for a bill that eliminates mandatory minimum sentencing for crimes that include dealing drugs in a school zone. This condescending and arrogant liberal attitude of putting ideology above the law was flatly rejected by voters in the 2016 national election. Voters were fed up with the unconstitutional Obama era policies forced upon us that included DACA, the clean power plan, and obamacare subsidies. The wave of working middle-class families fighting to get their communities back is playing out across the country, as it needs to on Cape Cod.
