Cape Region Naval Sea Cadets Swim Meet

Contest shows off both local and regional talent

Earlier this Fall, U.S. Naval Cadet program members from Massachusetts and Long Island, NY converged on the Massachusetts Maritime Academy pool to compete in the Annual All-Regional Swim Meet that’s been held at MMA since 1981. Naval Sea Cadet Corps Units participating were the: Mass. Bay Division (Methuen area); Constitution Division (Boston area); Gosnold Division (Cape/South coast region); Michael Murphy Division and Theodore Roosevelt Division (both from Long Island, NY. NLCC Cadet teams were represented in the Michael Murphy, and Constitution Division.

While the recorded times and results are noted here, they do not convey the very close races in each event, and that the difference between places in each event was often a matter of hundreds of seconds. Several officers, cadets and family members attended as spectators, with roughly 150 people in attendance.

The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps is made up of two programs. The Navy League Cadet Corps, NLCC, (often simply referred to as the “League Cadets”) is the junior program for young people ages 10 through 13.  The Naval Sea Cadet Corps, NSCC, (often simply “Sea Cadets”). Is the senior program for young people ages 13 to 17.

For the Cape, Islands, and South coast region, the Cadets are coached by Marie Kates of Marshfield; Dalton Souza of Plymouth, and James McLoughlin of Buzzards Bay. The results for individual Cadets in the Gosnold Division were:

Backstroke, Second Place, Jacob Ward from Plymouth, with a time of 39.65 seconds;

Breastroke, Third Place, Joshua Taylor of Randolph with a time of 49.85;

Freestyle, Second Place, Lucas McFarland of Yarmouth and a time of 28.84;

The 4-Man Relay, Second Place with time of 56.97, the team consisted of Daniel Noons of Marshfield; Brice Anderson of Falmouth; Lucas McFarland of Yarmouth and Jacob Ward of Plymouth.

All events consisted of 50- yard heats.

Freestyle:  Mass Bay Division (25.82);
Backstroke:  Theodore Roosevelt (34.10);

League Cadets: Michael Murphy Division was top in all categories”

Over its 36 year history, two very prestigious trophies have been awarded to the top NSCC Units in each of the two key age groups among the Cadets.  The Richard Haskell Trophy to the top Sea Cadet Unit, and the Frederick Battle Trophy to top League Cadet Unit.
