County Administrator Corrects Record on Assembly Delegates

"Suite Deal Five" becomes "Five" is now "Suite Deal Four"

Editor's Note:  On March 12, 2018, Barnstable County administrator Jack Yunits responded to a public records request by Cape Cod Today for the names of the Barnstable County Assembly of Delegates members who took advantage of a "room upgrade" at a convention held at the Sheraton Boston.  Initially the report named six delegates who received room upgrades.  Shortly after we published, Mr. Yunits contact us to say that one of the six (Sue Moran) did not in fact attend the conference.    Today we were contacted by Mary Chaffee, Brewster delegate, who said that she also did not attend the convention.  She reported she was at an event in Lowell at that time.  We reached out to Jack Yunits this morning to ask for clarification.  His response appears below, verbatim.  He reports that Ms. Chaffee did not attend the event.   So, now, there are still four delegates remaining that will henceforth be called the "Suite Deal Four".

Statement from County Administrator Jack Yunits:

Kara Mahoney from our Finance Department who is splendid at providing us with facts and details has just forwarded me the final invoice data. Kara’s email is attached regarding the Assembly’s January attendance at the MMA conference.

It should be noted that the original information that I forwarded to you via a copy of an email that I had received from the Chair via the Assembly Clerk, on March 12 , was a copy of the November reservation request and deposit. The final outcome reflects timely cancelations from both Assembly Women Susan Moran and Mary Chaffee. Their deposits were refunded in full with no charge to the County. It should be noted that early reservations(November 17) are common for the MMA event because of the limited local hotel options around the MMA conference site. Schedule changes are not uncommon.

The confusion stems from our efforts to provide you with a timely records request reply recognizing your need for promptness in dealing with the news. In hindsight I should have verified the data on attendance and payment with Kara and thus I accept full responsibility for the error as published by Cape Cod Today. I hope that this matter has not impinged the reputation of Assembly Woman Chaffee in any way as her handling of the matter was professional in all regards and I suggest that the error is no way attributable to your publication.

Very truly yours,

Jack Yunits Jr

Hi Jack,

Per your request I looked at the amount paid to the Sheraton Hotel for the 2018 MMA Conference for the Delegates.

The County issued $5,871.30 directly to the hotel in November 2017 for 7 delegates including Mary Chafee ($604.30) and the Assembly Clerk.

On Feb 9th the Finance Department received a refund check from the Sheraton for Mary Chafee’s reservation in the amount of $604.30.

If you need anything further please let me know.

Kara
