The South Yarmouth Tennis Club, 149 Old Main Street, South Yarmouth, introduces a new, affordable initiative to provide youth, high school and college tennis players the opportunity to develop their skills on clay courts. The new membership package allows players age 22 and younger unlimited play June 15 – Labor Day for just $150 for the season with no additional court fees.
“Our goal is to develop the champions of tomorrow by providing juniors with a great opportunity to hit on some of the best clay courts on Cape Cod,” said Stan Werlin, Club President. “Younger players on Cape Cod do not have much chance to play on clay. Yet, internationally - many of the best players learn, train and compete on clay courts. Our goal with this initiative is to make an investment in young players by providing an affordable way for them to compete on this unique tennis surface,” he said.
Doug Leonard, Boys Varsity Tennis Coach at Monomoy High School, agrees enthusiastically. “SYTC played a huge role in producing the recent run of elite Cape high school players including Patrick Wyeth, Cam Mazzoni, Sonny Bisazza, Tyler Shibles and Max Francis. I worked with these players at SYTC and saw directly how the clay was instrumental in helping them build all-around tennis superiority.”
Rich Shannon, Head Pro at SYTC, and Coach of the Sturgis West Girls Varsity team, knows how important clay can be to the development of young players. “By their slower nature, clay courts lead to longer rallies and require players to develop superior consistency in their shot-making and better aerobic fitness. These skills are vital for tennis success. Learning how to hit topspin shots and how to slide on the courts is essential. Also a big benefit for players of all ages is that clay is a much cooler surface for play in hot summer conditions.”
In addition to the new Juniors Membership, Rich Shannon and Assistant Pro Cam Mazzoni direct the SYTC Summer Youth Tennis Program on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from July 2 through August 24. For more information please go to www.southyarmouthtennisclub.com for details and applications.
