Body Found in Rigging, 3 Others in Water Off Cape Cod
On this day in 1952, the Coast Guard found the sloop which went missing the day before after leaving Dennis headed for Plymouth.
With three bodies already found and a fourth in the ship's rigging, the Coast Guard said there is little hope for the other three missing sailors.
It is presumed by this report that the sloop left Dennis Northside and headed across Cape Cod Bay. See a reprint of the NT Times story below.
Nursed back to health in 4 months
On this day in June 1999, two juvenile pilot whales were stranded near Chatham, Massachusetts, on the Cape Cod coast.
Rescue teams led by the Cape Cod Stranding Network and the New England Aquarium treated the whales on the beach and rushed them to Mystic Aquarium's Aquatic Animal Study Center in Mystic, Connecticut, for further care.
Once there, scientists and volunteers worked for four months to nurse the whales back to health. The program chronicles the story of the two young whales and the efforts of biologists and volunteers who rehabilitated them and released them back into the ocean.
On this day in 2017 the Steamship Authority's MV Iyanough struck a jetty as it entered Hyannis Harbor. There were 48 passengers, 6 crew members and 3 food service workers on board the vessel at the time of the incident. Reports indicate 15 people were brought to Cape Cod hospital for various injuries. None of the injuries are said to be life-threatening.
All were forced to remain on board while rescuers sorted out those that would be airlifted versus those who would be escorted across the stone jetty to waiting boats that brought them ashore.
It remains unknown how the ship's officers allowed the vessel to go off course and crash into the jetty.
This was the first event in a year of wrecks, mechanical failures and deep criticism of Steamship Authority management.
