Statewide Groups Oppose Draft Memo to Keep Pilgrim Open

Cape Downwinders and others will deliver protest letter to Boston...

Boston, MA-Cape Downwinders, Boston Downwinders, Occupy Hingham, and others will travel to Boston to hand deliver letters today-signed by 27 Cape and state wide organizations representing thousands of constituents-petitioning Governor Charlie Baker, Attorney General Maura Healey, Senator Ed Markey, and Senator Elizabeth Warren to protest President Trump's plan to save closing nuclear reactors like the troubled Pilgrim nuclear reactor in Plymouth and call for immediate shutdown.

This draft Department of Energy memo specifically cites Pilgrim as a       reactor closing too soon.  According to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission ratings, Pilgrim is the most dangerous reactor in the U.S. Since the Entergy plan to close in 2019 was a business decision, that status could change under the Trump plan. The NRC active license for Pilgrim is open until 2032.

Diane Turco, Director of Cape Downwinders, is alarmed by the proposed plan.  "We must be ever vigilant to protect our communities.  We see new policies in place now across the nation that lower public safety standards and damage our environment. It could happen here."  Cape Downwinder Elaine Dickinson concludes, "Pilgrim is an existential threat to our communities.  Our elected officials must put pressure on the NRC and speak up now before any policy is put in place."
