June 24th the Family Pantry of Cape Cod kicked off the summer with a benefit at the Wychmere Beach Club in Harwich Port. It was chaired by Tom & Shelly O’Neill, David Metzler, Kip & Stephanie O’Neill, Matt & Erin Kelley, Paul Grover and Paul & Mary Jo Barett. Tom & Shelly O’Neill have been involved with the Pantry since the beginning. This Gala is the Pantry’s signature fund raiser which is very successful due to the O’Neill’s and the efforts of their committee.

This year, attendees sampled elegant edibles and danced to the rocking dance band “Pulse of Boston” all the while experiencing breathtaking views of the ocean, all for a good cause. Susan Adsit, President of the Board of Directors of the Family Pantry of Cape Cod presented two awards at this seventh annual summer gala.

The Founders’ Award which recognizes one of the very special business supporters of the Pantry. Its criteria being that the individual must share the passion and vision of the founders who started the pantry 25 years ago.  This year the Founders’ award was presented to The Cape Cod Chronicle and Publisher Hank Hyora. The Cape Cod Chronicle has supported the Family Pantry for the past 26 years by holding the annual winter "Helping Neighbors" campaign benefiting the Pantry and recently expanded the campaign to include a summer campaign.  In addition, Hyora and his team have kept the community updated by writing countless features about the Pantry and all of its activities.  The Chronicle ensures that those who need help are kept informed and those who can provide help have the opportunity.  As one of the two remaining independently owned and operated newspapers on Cape Cod, The Chronicle who has been publishing since 1965 understands that the people in the community are what’s important to keep informed, tell stories about and help when in need. The Pantry was delighted to recognize all Hank Hyora and the Cape Cod Chronicle has done for the Pantry.

The President’s Award which is given to a person or family who is a strong supporter of the pantry was presented to the Barnstable County AmeriCorps Cape Cod. AmeriCorps has supported the Pantry over the past six years, working primarily in the 9,000 sq. foot Family Pantry garden.  Each year a team of corps members help to open and close the garden, preparing for planting, aligning irrigation and general clean up.  They return mid season to help with the heavy lifting of weeding, harvesting and rototilling.  This work is critical as the garden typically produces up to 6,300 pound of fresh vegetables and herbs each year for the Pantry clients.  The award was accepted by Daniel Schell, program coordinator AmeriCorps Cape Cod. The Pantry was so pleased to be able to recognize their volunteer hours by presenting the Family Pantry of Cape Cod’s President's award to AmeriCorps Cape Cod.
