A strong "teachable moment" shared by Harwich Fire Department:

A friendly reminder, when using cleaning products, it is important that you read and follow the manufacturer directions for use.

While it may seem ok to use one product followed by another, rarely do cleaning products mix well - even those labeled as green or environmentally friendly.

Yesterday, with the best of intentions, a resident tried unclogging the drain in their dishwasher. Because the first cleaner hadn’t drained before the second cleaner was added, there was a reaction that caused a strong chlorine smell and some discomfort to the occupants.

The fire department responded and ultimately had to remove the dishwasher to get the chemicals out of the house. The House was ventilated and both occupants were checked by personnel but not transported.

Harwich Police assisted at the scene with traffic control.
