2/3 million acres to be leased on Georges Bank

On this day in 1979 the US Department of the Interior turned down a sanctuary designation request for the ocean waters off Cape Cod, a move which allowed the DOI to immediately proceed with the sale of leases for 660,000 acres on Georges Bank for the drilling of oil.
